Spring Walking and Hiking in Regina

  • March 28, 2024

Spring is a wonderful time to be in Regina: days are getting brighter, warmer and sunnier.  After being indoors during the winter months, we humans feel the need to be out and about.  Regina has great walking trails, ranging from easy strolls to longer hikes, in and around the city or out in Mother Nature either by foot or bicycles.  As well, there are pet-friendly designated walks.

WASCANA TRAILS and WASCANA VALLEY NATURE RECREATION SITE

Just a half hour drive northwest of the city are the very popular Wascana Trails and site.  There are 15 km's of trails accessible to everyone in ALL seasons to hike, bike, ski or do some birdwatching. The Wascana outer loop offers a moderately challenging 7.4 km trail for bikers, walkers and hikers.  It is a gorgeous trail with a few, short climbs.  The trails are open from May to October and can be done under 2 hours.

A. E. WILSON PARK LOOP

The walk is moderately challenging with a distance of approximately 3.5 km's that can be done within 50 minutes.  The park loop is described as great for birding, snowshoeing, running, walking,  and is open-year round.  There are beach and lake views.  Dogs must be on leash.  The park loop has an elevation gain of 55 meters. The walk has been described as a nice urban trail with lots of changes between wide green spaces, bush, creek, park and waterside trails.

PILOT BUTTE CREEK PATHWAY

The Pilot Butte Creek Pathway is a 7.7 km. point-to-point trail near Regina.  It is a moderately challenging route with an approximate hour and 50 minute walk.  It is great for hiking, walking, and road biking.  During off times, it is not generally too  busy so if you want to enjoy the scenery, just go during off times.  The weather between May to September is a lovely outdoor experience.  There is also a fun, inner-city option.  Start at Henry Braun Park, pass through Parkridge Park, the Creekside Environmental Reserve, Fines Drive Park, Selinger Park and ends at Wascana Creek Park all while following the Pilot Butte Creek.  The trailhead is located in a residential area with a school nearby so do consider this when planning on driving to the location.   This trail allows you to touch part of the Trans-Canada Trail so you can boast to your friends that you did a part of the Trans-Canada Trail!  As well, you will pass a nice section of riverwalk, awesome houses and people walking dogs.

SUNSET VIEWING

Sunsets in Regina are spectacular: the sky can turn into a flamboyant, ever-changing, painter's dream of multi-colours, sweeping over the landscapes of grasses and wildflowers.  Go to DOUGLAS PARK HILL which is a local spot to take in the sunset.  The ever beautiful Saskatchewan sunset falls over Regina, including downtown, First Nations University and the  Legislative Buildings.

DAYS INN REGINA EAST welcomes you to their conveniently located hotel in the heart of the city which combines family-friendly amenities with affordable rates.  Enjoy your stay in the city and hotel.
